Oatmeal.

I have a new love. Oatmeal.

When I was a kid, my parents never forced me to eat it like lots of Moms and Dads because they don't like oatmeal either, though my Dad tries to eat it for his heart health, but gives up after a couple days. We ate grits instead, which I really doubt have any nutritional value. I'll have to google that.

So my whole 26, almost 27 years, I've avoided oatmeal. I got a health screening a month or so ago and fortunately all my OCD gym attendance/food choices have paid off over the years and I'm in tip top shape in terms of cholesterol and blood pressure and such, whew! But the heart issues run in my family and we are all quickly getting old if you guys hadn't noticed, and so ALAS! I turn to oatmeal to lower my already fairly low LDL cholesterol. So for three days, I ate two bites of oatmeal and then dumped the bowl. BUT on day 4, I had a breakthrough. I started to mask my oatmeal intake by covering it with Kashi cereal, the yummy honey almond flax kind, and so that gave it crunch. Then, I removed that element and turned to cinnamon and sugar, which I can handle now. And today I added raisins. It was actually good and I ate the whole 3/4 cup which apparently is what you're supposed to eat. It took me a week to get to this point. What this means is that when I actually am OLD and actually do have terrible cholesterol from being old and the doctor suggests eating oatmeal, I'll be ready. No worries.

So here's my poll: How do you take your oatmeal?

This is similar to the how do you take your coffee question so if you'd like to throw that in there, feel free. I take mine with a splash of fat free hazelnut creamer in case you were wondering.

On a completely random note...have I been the only one in the dark about google scholar? googlescholar.com. wow.

  1. A couple of things:

    a) I hate oatmeal. So I can't help your poll.

    b) We also ate grits. And to this day I love them. And I'm convinced they have some hidden nutritional/life-enriching side to them that no one has realized yet.

    c) Black coffee.

    d) Who knew 10 years ago we'd be talking about cholesterol on our blogs?

    e) I probably shouldn't have eaten half of a pizza tonight.

  2. I eat it with a tablespoon of dark brown sugar and a teaspoon of Smart Balance. Yum. I need to start eating it again.
