Sub-Title: Things That Remind Me I'm 30 in Two Months
Today was the longest day ever. There was work, where I did things that have nothing to do AT ALL with my actual job. There was rain. There were no parking spots at USC so I had to walk in the rain. There was the class I walked to where AGAIN we had to go around the table and tell what our dissertation ideas are. Eeeeek! That's all I have to say about that. The more I have to stammer and stumble through the dissertation topic talk, the more confused I feel, which is just the nature of things I guess. Because there was no food in my house, I ended the day with a 7:30 trip to Publix, which was ridiculous and where the laughing/sobbing about my age thing started.
Let me explain. I had to stand at the deli for 15 minutes waiting on the three deli people to slice me a half a pound of turkey. Let me do the approximate math (because I can't do real math at the moment) for you--that's about 8 slices, so like 1 slice for every 1 and a half to 2 minutes-ish. Standing there watching deli workers be ridiculous, I aged. While I was aging, I turned to see about 5 girls come into the store. They were smiling and happy. Not tired. They were in college and had obviously piled into the car to take a fun trip to the store. In college, going to the store is fun. They were wearing leggings and rain boots. All of them. Let me just be honest about leggings. They are tricky. Unless you are 20. Then, they are spectacular. But as someone who was aging at the deli counter, I immediately felt annoyed/envious by their spectacular leggings and rain boots. As they came down the aisle, they filled their cart with awesome things like boxes of Capri Sun, sushi that'd been there since 2PM probably, jars of olives (um, martinis, duh), a random orange, and other things that looked nothing like the stuff in my cart. Remember I was aging at the deli, so I had lots of time to look in their carts as they tooled around in their rain boots.
So the point is that when you are faced with these situations, you have two options: 1) you can laugh and blog about it, or 2) you can sob about how old you are, how you can't wear leggings anymore (or maybe could, but never would), how drinking a Capri Sun seems stupid because you could drink water from the sink instead and save five dollars, how you don't really like sushi, even if it is trendy, and how you prefer your martinis without the olives because actually eating dinner seems much more appealing.

Furn-i-ture!
Today, procrastination is key. I need to be doing work; it's time to admit that another semester (THE LAST REAL SEMESTER OF COURSEWORK!) really has started. I worked for approximately 20 minutes and now need to blog.
So, here are the new chairs we got last weekend. The first two will be in the den.
This one has an ottoman that I forgot to take a picture of. It's also back ordered for 6 weeks.

This one is lemon lime green, and I love it the most. I am hoping that it actually matches the couch once we get it back from the upholsterer which should be sometime this week.

This one is going in the living room eventually. It was fun and not really on our list of stuff we were looking for, but we got it anyway. Will said, "It's better to have too many than not enough." Really!? As of a week ago, he was perfectly content with us having no furniture and sitting in the floor.

Signs You're Losing It
Here are ten signs you are losing your mind if you are a person who has not been to work all week because of snow or ice or both.
1. You try to high-five the dog because three new Netflix movies came in the mail. Three! Even though, the movies include: Sherlock Holmes, Dinner for Schmucks, and The Hurt Locker. It doesn't matter. It could've been a documentary on how to raise a goat or make cheese from a goat or have a goat as a pet.
2. You think about this

every time your dog stretches and you shout, "Howl to the moon like you mean it!!!"
3. You actually consider ordering one of these because it looked so interesting in the checkout girl's hair at Target...the first place you went after three days of no human interaction other than your husband. You don't want to wear it really, but would just like to see what it would look like.
5. You go to Target to get hot chocolate and cookie dough. This is abnormal and stupid, but what else is there to do!?
6. You eat chocolate chip cookies for lunch.
7. You watch soap operas whose story lines you know nothing about and wonder the following: Why are they home in the middle of the day? Did the ground turn into an ice skating rink in their fake world too? If they are iced in, why are they dressed so fancy? Should I put shoulder pads on with these pjs I've been wearing for three days? Why do they act so surprised every time someone rings the doorbell? They weren't doing anything anyway. How do they know so many people either in jail or in the hospital? I currently know no one in either place. How does one come to own a perfume corporation? Do perfume corporations really have mad scientist labs and if they do, do the people working in them really wear white lab coats?
8. At 1:30, you decide to get in bed and read a book. At 5:00, you ask yourself, should I get up and pretend I've been doing stuff all day so that when my husband gets home he'll be fooled into thinking I'm not lazy? Then you realize you don't care and keep reading.
9. You consider doing homework for the grad class that should have started Tuesday. You are supposed to read...from a book. You find a pen and some little sticky note tabs and the book, take them all downstairs, put them on the coffee table, and watch them collect dust for two days. You say hi to them, ask them how they are, and feel sad when they don't answer, but yet still make you feel guilty for ignoring them. Then you remember, that's just part of being in grad school.
10. You get excited when the mailman brings a package to the door. Not because of the package, but because he rings the doorbell which makes the dogs go insane which makes you get to shout at them to be quiet, which you realize feels like you are back at work (if you are a teacher at least).

Snow Day Shenanigans!
Since being trapped at home for what's now four days, I've become a painter by trade.
Monday, we painted the den.
Monday night, Will tried to polyurethane the back door. Bad idea.
Tuesday, I painted the back door. Better idea. :)
Wednesday, I painted the hallway and stairs. No more crazy yellow.
Thursday, I need to put another coat on the walls in the hall but am out of paint. Might have to venture to the Depot for another gallon.
Let's back up. Here's what we've been up to in house renovations. First, I've learned that working on the house never really stops. I keep thinking, "Oh, when we finish this project, we'll be done." No. There's always another, and it's been that way for four years.
So, back in September (I think), Will decided it was time to rip up the carpet in the den.
Exhibit A:

We lived on a concrete floor for a while.
Then in November, Will put hardwoods down, and we lived on those before they were sanded and finished for a month or two.
Then there was New Year's Eve. It was not filled with parties and sequins. Instead it was filled with sawdust and polyurethane. Yes, you read that correctly. All day, I sanded (yes, me!) the floor in the den and then we put down around 5 coats of polyurethane. We were sort of high for days.

The floor isn't this shiny anymore.
While I did that, Will ripped carpet off the stairs and out of the hallway upstairs and laid down hardwoods. He worked all the way until midnight. Happy New Year!

Thankfully my sis and her husband and their friends came over and blew up some seriously loud fireworks in my backyard though, so we still celebrated (while barely functioning since we were sort of high from inhaling polyurethane fumes all day).
Now, we are waiting to get our couch back from the upholsterer. It will have this fabric on it.

It's okay if you just cringed and thought, "Oh, god!" This picture makes me cringe too. In real life, the colors are more muted, so it's not nearly as tacky as this looks. I've also got my eye on this blue love seat.

Will is not a fan because it's microfiber, and apparently there is an unspoken rule about how low-quality microfiber is. One of his family's friends gave us great advice over the holidays--buy the love seat, it'll look like crap in two years, and get it recovered then. Perhaps if she saw they picture of the fabric we picked out for the couch, she might rethink that advice. But really, I promise, the fabric is NOT that crazy in real life. I've convinced Will of this sage advice (almost), so maybe we'll have that blue love seat soon.

Wabbits & Chickens
I've been an extreme slacker about my documentation of things we've been up to around the house. Today I'm playing catch up.
We've still got the animals, and as Will recently said, "You know, the chickens are the most productive project I've ever had."
These shots of the rabbits are from a couple months ago. In real life they are about twice this size now. Will has actually been quite the salesman and sold all of these rabbits except one, which will probably be sold later this week. Who knew people would pay $30 for a rabbit?? Works for me!
Check out those ears!

Nice boots.

The grass is always greener...

The newer flock of chickens. We have six of these lovely ladies--three Plymouth Rocks and three Wyandottes. These chickens are my favorite to look at because I'm amazed by their feather pattern. I have to admit though, their personalities are rather dull.

Resolve
I have three amazing resolutions for 2011. Here they are:
1. Floss every single stinkin' day. I have a love/hate relationship with flossing. This year, it's all love.
2. Take my multivitamin and calcium supplement every single stinkin' day. I have a love/hate relationship with vitamins. This one makes less sense than my ambiguous relationship with floss. I'm going to work on that.
3. I have to do an ab workout at least 3-4 times a week. I have a love/hate relationship with ab workouts. I love the effect, but I hate actually doing the workout. I'll happily perform any other exercise, but if you ask me to do crunches I'll have a fit. I have to get over that.
So that's them. The 2011 resolutions, the three things I hate to do more than anything else. Looks to be an exciting year! Giggle.
